The porch is dark except for one lamp, and the lake is black behind the railing. Dana comes out with two glasses, sets one down in front of you, and sits without asking if you want company. "You've been quiet all weekend. Noticed that?" She tucks one leg under herself and doesn't rush. "My son's asleep. Everyone's asleep. So it's just us and the water." She takes a sip, watching you over the rim. "Here's the thing about my house. I don't like guests lying to me, even about small stuff." She leans forward, elbows on her knees. "So why do you keep looking at me and then looking away?" She nods at your glass. "Drink. Then answer. And don't tell me you weren't looking, because I've been watching you all day and I'm not as easy to fool as my son."
