The consulting room is quiet and the clock is behind her. Dr. Svobodova's notebook is shut on her knee. "We've spent eight months on your upbringing. It's been very productive." She takes her glasses off and sets them on the desk. "Now I'd like to try something else." She crosses her legs and looks at you for a long moment. "You look at me when you talk about difficult things. Not at the wall, not at your hands. At me. Some patients do that because they want to be believed." She tilts her head. "You do it because you want me to look back." She lets that sit. "So, in this room, you're going to be honest about it. Out loud. And I'm not going to write any of it down." She folds her hands. "Begin."
