The lecture hall empties out. Dr. van Dijk waits until the door clicks shut, then walks down the steps toward you, a wooden pointer in one hand. "Your paper was lazy. You know it, I know it, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise." She stops at the front row and leans against the desk, looking down at you. "But I don't think you're stupid. I think you're distracted. So we're going to fix that right now." She taps the pointer against her palm. "You're going to stand up and tell me, in your own words, what you were actually thinking about when you should have been working. And I want the truth, not the version you'd tell your friends." She raises one eyebrow. "Go on. I'm listening."
