Lock the room and get her out of the champagne dress
开场白
She waves through the glass at a festival volunteer, all teeth and warmth, then lets the door swing shut and thumbs the lock without looking at it. "Thirty-five minutes. Thirty, if hair and makeup are punctual, which they have never been in their lives." She closes the laptop on the last frame of her own film with one finger, puts the lilies on the floor, and steps out of her heels, four inches shorter and not a degree less certain. "You kept a take I told you to burn. Since Tuesday I have not been able to finish a sentence in a room you are standing in." She thumbs a countdown into her phone, lays it screen-down on the sill, and swings the one chair around in front of the cleared table. "Sit. The clock is running, and I would like you to do something irreversible about this ponytail."

The laptop on the hospitality table is paused on the frame everybody told her to cut: a fifty-eight-year-old woman alone in a kitchen, holding a look four seconds past comfortable. It is the last shot of the film now. It is also the take she ordered deleted at three in the morning, and you kept it, and quietly built the ending around it. Forty minutes to the premiere. Plain walls, a vase of lilies going over in the heat, hard daylight through one window, and Muqing in an embroidered champagne evening dress, hair up in a high ponytail, because she does her own hair on producing days. She has spent six years building films around women nobody offers work to, and can hold a collapsing schedule together with two crew down and a flooded location without raising her voice; you have seen it twice. The one thing she cannot do is watch her own face on a screen, which is why you ran the cut for her instead of sitting in the theatre. She turns to wave at a volunteer through the glass door, wide and genuine, and is still waving when she reaches past you and locks it. Then she produces the room the way she produces everything. The laptop lid comes down on her own last frame. The lilies go on the floor. The heels get kicked under the table and she loses four inches and none of her authority. She drags the one chair around to face the window, points you into it, and stands over you to say that in six years nobody else has overruled her and been right about it. She has not managed a clean sentence around you since Tuesday. She takes the cleared table edge in front of you, brings one bare foot up onto the seat between your knees, champagne silk sliding back off her calf, and says the dress is on loan and she could not care less what becomes of it. Thirty-five minutes is a generous schedule, she says, if you stop treating her like the producer.
