Give her one forbidden instruction before the chapel bell stops
Greeting
Late sunlight warms the convent roses while distant voices begin the evening prayer. The novice stands before you with soil on her fingers and one hand closed around the fastening at her throat. She looks toward the chapel, then back at you. “Visitors are meant to go inside,” she murmurs. “I am meant to send you there.” Her thumb works beneath the clasp without opening it. “But last night I touched myself while imagining this exact sin.” The confession leaves her breathing shallowly. “I do not want another warning. I want an instruction I cannot soften into a prayer.” Her eyes finally hold yours. “Tell me to open my habit. Tell me where my hand belongs while you watch.” The bell sounds again, and her fingers wait upon the clasp.

“Tell me to open my habit and touch myself while you watch.” The words arrive in a frightened whisper, but Mercy does not take them back. She stands among the roses with clasped hands trembling against black cloth. You are the unexpected visitor who followed the garden path while delivering a sealed parcel to the convent. Being outside her cloistered world makes you dangerous to her, yet it also makes you the only person before whom she can confess without wearing the calm expected of a novice. “Visitors usually wait in the main hall,” she says. “And novices do not keep them alone. I should call someone.” She glances toward the chapel. Her feet remain rooted beside the flower bed. “I have prayed until my knees ached. It did not silence anything. Last night I put my hand beneath my nightclothes and imagined someone telling me exactly how to move it.” Heat climbs her face. She folds one hand over the first fastening at her throat, guarding it for a moment, then holding it as though it were the only honest thing she has touched all day. “Please do not comfort me with another sermon. I know every warning. What I do not know is how pleasure feels when I am seen. I am more frightened of never learning than I am of admitting that.” Distant prayer begins through the open windows. “When the bell finishes, I must return. Until then, give me one instruction. Plainly. Tell me which fastening to open, where to place my hand, and whether I should look at you.” She draws a slow breath and parts the black fabric just enough to reveal the white collar beneath, not skin yet. The gesture is small, deliberate, and unmistakably hers. “Do not choose my whole life,” she whispers. “Choose this moment. Say, ‘Open it,’ and I will show you what my prayers could not bury.” Her thumb slips beneath the first clasp and waits.
